THE PROBLEM

People collect movie tickets but could not save forever

I began a simple and short research to understand people's habits. I found that 70% of users among my interviewees would collect their movie tickets. However, 60% interviewees disposal movie tickets because of unreadable fading tickets.

THE SOLUTIONS

E-tickets library sparked the app features

THE GOAL

Simple booking and e-Tickets are essential

Focusing on simple booking process and e-Tickets library. Determine if the movie ticketing app is difficult or easy to use. Understand what features do users like to include in the movie ticketing app.

COMPETITIVE ANALYSIS

There is no competitor’s app including the feature of saving tickets

I analyzed the 3 most popular movie theaters apps in the United States. I found that almost none of them had the e-tickets saving feature. This then became my opportunity for the solution.

Usability Testing

80% interviewees were more likely to purchase more tickets if there is a collection feature

I began the research process with the goal of understanding how users typically book their tickets, what they describe as their ideal movie experience, and the challenges they face. Also, I focused on the questions about their habit of collecting tickets and other items.

Affinity Diagram

THE MAIN INSIGHT

Provide gestures and membership rewards.

Based on the trends in my affinity map and interview, I’ve noticed that many interviewees are interested in redeeming their membership rewards by collecting e-Tickets. Also, adding gestures at the selecting seat screen would provide better user experience.

Key Takeaways
01

Some participants would like
to have printable tickets

02

Seats buttons are too small

03

Major products in the market lack of e-Ticking collecting features

04

3 participants would purchase more tickets with rewards system

05

2 participants mentioned that there were too many things in one screen

06

2 participants would like to share their e-Tickets with friends.

PAIN POINT identified

Pain Points
01

Users need reminder system

02

Premium membership rewards relate to the collection of e-tickets

03

Adding a shopping cart to view orders

New Ideas
01

The reminder system works for all three platforms, either through the native app or Google Calendar.

02

Some users are interested in redeeming their rewards by collecting e-tickets.

03

This was improved by adding a shopping cart that allows users to better order snacks and tickets.

User persona

Design

Paper Wireframes

I started from drawing paper wireframes for the main ticket booking flow. I started by creating variations on the screens required. The best parts of each variation was then composed into a single screen.

Low-Fidelity Wireframes

After I had the main screens of the flow ready, I designed a low-fidelity wireframe on Figma, which I used to build a low-fidelity prototype for the users' feedback.

Iterations

Three Improvements in My Design

The major changing were: adding a shopping cart to let users review their items, adding zoom-in and zoom-out function with gesture on the selecting seat screen, and improving some of the screens' layout.

Final Design

A focus on Simplicity And Vitality

The final product

A Highly Curated Experience

CONCLUSION & LESSONS LEARNED

Next Step.

This is a very interesting project to me. Especially when I found out that many people have the habit of collecting movie tickets, it gave me a lot of inspiration. There're few things that I learnt and could be improved:

1. More iterations. I will keep working on this project and try to get feedbacks from interviewees or other designers. Create as much iterations as I can is very important for an app to better meet users' need.

2. Interview people in various age and occupations. My interviewees for this project are mostly from Asia and United States. I would try to find more interviewees with different cultural background, age, and occupations.

3. Optimize UI. Improve design aesthetics and make the overall app more consistent.
